If God changes lives, why is mine stuck in the mud?
We all want life change, but achieving it is hard. As Christians, we know we’ve got God’s help. Jesus has made it possible. The Holy Spirit even lives inside us! And yet, too many Christians are stuck in the mud when it comes to life change. What’s going on? Can things ever get better? Can my life ever turn the corner?
Pastor Chip Ingram’s answer is simple: Yes, you really CAN change! With godly wisdom and practical advice drawn straight from Scripture, Chip will help you answer questions such as:
- Why do so many Christians change so little?
- Where do we get the power to change?
- How do you know when you’re really changing?
- How do you break out of a destructive lifestyle?
- How do you make it last?
In Yes, You Really CAN Change, you’ll learn the difference between living for God’s approval and from God’s approval. It’s time to get off the hamster wheel of Christian expectations. Only when you understand your full acceptance by a loving God can life change begin to happen.

Genuine, lasting life-change is not an ancient myth. It is absolutely possible today. Many Christians throughout history, including right now, have experienced it. That’s actually the distinguishing mark of the Christian faith – radically transformed lives over time. The testimonies of people saved from the depths of sin are true, and they aren’t only for those from extreme backgrounds. Any believer at any time can begin to experience the kind of change the New Testament promises.
I think the reason so many people don’t is that we’ve believed a lot of things that have taken us in the wrong direction. I certainly experienced that cycle of “try hard, do good, fail” in my early years as a Christian. I quickly learned that a lot of people were experiencing the same thing but had simply gotten to the “fake it” stage before I did. Yet deep down inside, every human being longs for real change. It’s in our spiritual DNA. We crave it in our fallen condition, and when we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit breathes those longings into us anew. God has made us to want change. That’s why the self-help industry is a multibillion-dollar industry. We want to live better, think better, look better, relate better, and experience more. We were made in the image of God, and we’re instinctively trying to get back to it.
I imagine you’ve experienced these longings yourself. You’ve probably also experienced the struggles that come with them. The good news is that change really is possible, and God wants you to experience it. He is on your side in this transformation process. And if God is on your side, who can be against you (Rom. 8:31)? The obstacles are not too great. God’s promises are not uncertain. And His power is not lacking. The only thing most people are missing is an understanding of God’s transformational process – knowing how to experience the kind of change promised in our new birth and new life in Christ.
The gospel of Jesus Christ really does change lives when we know how to apply it and let the power of God work in us. The lack of transformation in many Christians’ lives is not the fault of Jesus or His Word. There is nothing defective in the gospel, no missing information, no secret to change that hasn’t already been revealed. Far too many people have experienced the kind of radical transformation depicted and promised in the Bible for us to wonder whether it’s true.
You can be confident that this radical transformation is not just for a select few people who happen to be especially touched by God’s power. It’s for you. This is your inheritance as a believer in Jesus. God is calling you – and will enable you – to live as a new creation.
